The Executive Search Group presents our Featured Candidate, “Wei”, who is an expert in plush toys. Here are Wei’s thoughts:

ESG: Wei, more than anyone, you are the embodiment of Chief Cook and Bottle Washer of the plush industry. Can you tell us what you bring to a plush company?

Wei: At the base level I am a plush designer with almost 9,000 plush designs in the marketplace!  But my advanced skills are those of an Operations Manager who can head up Quality Control, manage costs, source materials and interface with the factory. I have worked with over 50+ factories in my career. I am tri-lingual as I speak Mandarin, Cantonese and of course English. 

ESG:  Tell us about your experience in China.

Wei:  I spent 10+ years working for one of China’s most prestigious plush manufacturers as well as establishing an overseas office for a US-based plush company.

ESG:  Can a plush company improve quality and reduce costs and if yes, how would you accomplish that?

 

Wei:  Yes. First you need to choose a quality vendor in a low cost country; examples are China and India. In China different areas have different labor cost so you have to be savvy enough to know where the best prices are. Local vendors can often offer a little lower cost than a bigger vendor. It is essential to simplify the paper pattern in size and shape, this makes production a little easier so that the cost can be reduced and at same time improve quality. Choose the right plush fabric supplier as a long-term business partner.  Establish a relationship where both parties win; they will be happy to offer lower prices and better quality to keep the relationship growing. 

 

ESG:  What is the most important piece of advice you have learned during your career in plush?

 

Wei:  More than anything it is imperative to choose quality suppliers.  Develop mutually beneficial goals and work toward these goals, as long term partners with respect and honesty. I always feel so happy to work with all suppliers and I get feedback that all the vendors are happy to work with me. Your vendors can save your life when you have urgent issues but they won’t do it for just anybody – they will however do it for their “partners”.
